CSIRO Future Of Health Report Proposes New Direction

CSIRO Future Of Health Report Proposes New Direction

18th Sep 18

Summary —

The CSIRO has released its Future of Health report into how health outcomes can be improved by a shift away from ad-hoc illness treatment to more comprehensive wellbeing management. Crucially, the report identifies improvements to pathways to market for therapeutic products as a key enabler for this shift that should be supported by Government.

Key Issues For The Dental Industry —

The CSIRO Future of Health report has found that while the health sector will always be required to treat illness, improvements to health outcomes can arise through a shift in focus towards cost-effective and evidence-backed preventative, precision-based, and digitally enabled health and wellbeing solutions.

The application of this approach to dental care in Australia, for example, would see the promotion of preventative dental care become the focus of dental practitioners. Rather than patients seeking the support of oral health practitioners only upon suffering from symptoms of illnesses, this approach would encourage all Australians to visit a dental practice more frequently for ongoing preventative care. In addition to reducing the incidence and severity of acute oral health illnesses, this approach could increase the percentage of Australia’s population that seek the services of the dental sector on a regular basis; thereby creating growth opportunities for businesses that supply and manufacture dental products.

Of particular relevance to businesses that supply and manufacture dental products is the CSIRO’s identification of improvements to pathways to market for therapeutic products as a key enabler for a shift towards preventive healthcare and wellbeing management.

The report found that efficient paths to market attract international investment and motivate Australian companies to commercialise onshore – providing economic and knowledge benefits to the nation and the potential for growth in Australian industry. Safer and more efficient pathways also improve the quality and effectiveness of health solutions and ensure Australian consumers are best placed to receive first access to innovative health solutions.

The Australian Dental Industry Association (ADIA), the peak businesses organisation that represents manufacturers and suppliers of innovative dental products, plays a key role in supporting the development of a regulatory framework for dental products that is based on a risk management approach designed to ensure public health and safety, while at the same time freeing industry from any unnecessary regulatory burden. In this context, ADIA will support the implementation of the CSIRO’s recommendation to make it easier for dental product suppliers and manufacturers to bring safe, effective, and innovative products to the Australian market.
